1000 book challenge

One year ago, Sunny, Posy and I finished a 1000 Book Challenge. We read all the time and honestly, I was getting tired of reading the same books all the time. They certainly had their favorites. So I decided to do a 1000 Book Challenge with them - we maintained a list in an Excel sheet to make sure we didn't count duplicates, and reading the same book multiple times (which we did plenty of) didn't count. It had to be 1000 different books.

It was AWESOME. We read anything and everything from the children's section of the library. Classics like Hans Christian Anderson, Beatrix Potter, and Dr. Seuss. The entire Adventures in Alphabet-Town series - one for every letter of the alphabet. We met Fancy Nancy and Amelia Bedelia (which the girls couldn't say at first - that was amusing) and Angelina Ballerina. More Berenstain Bears than I can count. For awhile, we would get any book from the library we could find that had a hippo on the cover. And toward the end, Sunny started on chapter books - we had 3 in the official count. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, Dr. Dolittle, and Charlotte's Web. (And she had started on the first Harry Potter with her dad before we got to 1000.) The whole thing made me broaden my search for good books for them, rather than just sticking with the few things I was already familiar with.

We started just after Sunny turned 3 and Posy was about 20 months old. We finished when Sunny was 4 1/2 and right after Posy turned 3. It took exactly 1 year, 4 months and 15 days. We could have done it faster, but we slowed waaaay down during part of my pregnancy with Birdie (who was born in the middle of it). We also would have finished sooner if I'd been more on top of maintaining the list when friends read to the girls rather than me doing it all.

I plan to do it again when Birdie turns 3, and Magnolia will be about a year and a half. We'll shoot for getting it under a year next time. It is totally possible to do it in 10 months with not a lot of extra effort.
