The Piano Guys

Last night, we went to a performance of The Piano Guys. Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson did pretty much the entire show - they did some combined pieces, then Jon solo, intermission, Steven solo, and a couple more combined pieces. For their encore, Paul Anderson and Al Van Der Beek joined them on stage for their play-the-WHOLE-piano version of "That's What Makes You Beautiful," which I really wanted to see. So I loved that!

They were funny in the dialogue (Steven "introduced" all of his cellos, which are named), they showed their videos on screens behind them as they played, and it was just good. Not every song was accompanied with a video, but they did show footage with Peponi, Code Name Vivaldi, Kung Fu Piano, and a couple of others.

My one disappointment is that they didn't do Let It Go/Vivaldi's Winter. I had that video on repeat all day leading up to the concert.

Steven gave me a quote that is sticking with me. He attributed it to one of his college music professors.

I can't teach you passion. I can just be passionate in front of you and hope it catches on.

Homeschooling. That.

And we did indeed take 5 children with us. We originally bought tickets for the 2 babies, Magnolia and Azalea, because we had to due to their fire code. We ended up leaving them with the neighbor and taking 2 of her kids instead since we had the tickets. Of the 5, one fell asleep for awhile, and the other four never stopped talking or moving. That did, admittedly, detract from the concert for me. But the kids were mostly connected with the performance (when they weren't complaining of being too hot, but it was roasting up there in the balcony) and their behavior wasn't awful. I'm willing to keep taking them to the theater for concerts and performances at this young age ... but I would definitely prefer matinees! We didn't get home from this one until 11:30 pm.
