update on Project Nellie Bly

1. Read the book "Around the World in 80 Days" by Jules Verne out loud together.
We started reading but haven't gotten very far yet.

2. Watch the movie "Around the World in 80 Days."
Not yet.

3. Read a biography about Nellie Bly.
We read out loud The Daring Nellie Bly: America's Star Reporter by Bonnie Christensen.

4. Read a biography about Jules Verne.
Sunny watched a video on biography.com about him, and we just got a book from the library but haven't read it yet. He was called the Father of Science Fiction.

5. Study countries that Nellie Bly traveled to: England, France, Italy, Egypt, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Japan.
We've learned a lot about Japan, thanks to Dad's friend Sam who lives there. He answered lots of questions, sent postcards, and even sent hair clips. Sunny wants to do Girls Day next spring, a traditional Japanese holiday.

Sunny's aunt spent a year in England, and answered a number of questions as well. To learn about England, we found a rugby match on YouTube to watch - that is a crazy sport! We also looked at a lot of pictures of fascinator and hatinator (the really huge ones) hats.

Sunny decided to balance a Halloween tutu on her head for her HATINATOR!

We've sent more emails about some of the other countries, but I apparently need to followup on those better because we haven't heard back from anyone else. All of the emails we've gotten back so far have been printed out and put in a Project Nellie Bly binder.

6. Get a world map and track Nellie Bly's trip on it.
The map has been ordered online but isn't here yet. (And I have no idea where I'm going to put it on a wall.)

7. Put together a puzzle of the flags of the world with Dad.
The puzzle has been started but isn't done yet. It's a 1000 piece puzzle that I got for AC for Christmas a couple of years ago.

Getting going on the puzzle.

8. Make a school newspaper.
Sunny made a newspaper called The Broomsticks in honor of her fascination with Harry Potter.

9. Attend the homeschool international fair in East Windsor on March 15.
We did attend but this didn't go over too well. Sunny was not impressed that there was "nothing to do," just posters to look at. (Isn't that what these fair things are supposed to be?) She did write a limerick at the Ireland station:
There once was a girl named Summer
Who everyone thought was a bummer.
She didn't let them down
'Cause she saved the town
And now they say she's no dummer.
