end-of-the-year profile updates

Our "reader" page profiles in January were listed like this (my notes for posterity), and here are some follow-up notes as well:

AC
occupation: dad, attorney, gardener
favorite type of books: military history
a favorite book: Just So Stories
hobbies besides reading: cooking, gardening, woodworking, soccer
an educational goal for 2014: grow our first full-size in-the-ground garden

We had our garden this year - tomatoes and a number of other vegetables in the backyard, and started strawberries in the front. We got a good start on the berries, but the backyard garden didn't fare so well. We have a lot (A LOT - more than 50 on 3/4-acre) of trees in our backyard and the garden didn't get enough sun. We got some vegetables, but it wasn't the plethora of produce we were hoping for. We're making plans to change the location for next spring.

This is some terracing AC started along our driveway for strawberry bushes - eventually the terracing will have another layer of stones across the top to edge the yard, and will go the full length of the driveway to the sidewalk. This is about 12 feet of 50 or so that we're shooting for.

TK
occupation: mom, writer, aspiring quilter and gardener
favorite type of books: biographies
a favorite book: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
hobbies besides reading: travel and planning road trips, playing the piano and flute, writing, sewing
an educational goal for 2014: make a twin-sized quilt

I didn't finish any quilts but I have two started - one is a hobo rails pattern with a billion shades of pink, and the other is paper piecing huge flowers that I'm doing in bright colors. While I didn't meet that particular goal, I did do more sewing this year than the rest of my life combined. I made over 30 items of clothing for my girls, including birthday dresses for all five of them.

Another sewing project was red-white-and-blue skirts for Independence Day, for my 5 girls and 4 of their cousins. This is a bunch of the girls with my sister at our family reunion in Illinois.

SUNNY - year 3
favorite type of books: mysteries
a favorite book: Nancy Drew
hobbies besides reading: dancing, singing
an educational goal for 2014: read the entire Nancy Drew series

I don't know if she read EVERY Nancy Drew book because there are, what, close to a hundred? But she made a valiant effort of cleaning out every library we went to of their Nancy Drew collections. The new-to-her series she read this year were Anne of Green Gables, How to Train Your Dragon, and all 52 Magic Tree House books. She also had a goal to watch every single Harry Potter movie - she has just the last one left.

Sunny's biggest points of the year were in our faith. She was baptized in July, and in September, I took her on a mom-daughter trip to Utah for our general women's session of General Conference. At age 8, she is now old enough to attend. On that trip, we visited Temple Square, a pioneer village with some original homes from the 1800s, a dinosaur museum, and she rode a horse for the first time.

Sunny in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, UT.

POSY - year 1
favorite type of books: gardening books and cookbooks
a favorite book: Annie and Snowball stories, Henry and Mudge stories, Judy Moody
hobbies besides reading: draw and paint, dig in the dirt, tell stories
an educational goal for 2014: do lots of art projects

I don't know that we did lots of "projects" but Posy has gone through quite a stack of scratch paper with all kinds of drawings. Recently, she insisted on mailing one of her pictures to Grandma, of the "Mona Elsa." (Guess who's addicted to Frozen.) I had no idea that she'd heard of the Mona Lisa and da Vinci - apparently they were featured in one of the Magic Tree House books. She has also read all of the Magic Tree House books. Also, I originally had this year listed as her second, but really - 2013 was such a mess with all kinds of family issues that we didn't do much with homeschool. 2014 was her first year of really sitting down to do schoolwork, so we'll count this as year 1 for her.

Posy got Elsa and Anna dolls for her birthday in the fall.

BIRDIE - preschool
favorite type of books: anything with Disney Princesses, Sesame Street, or Dora the Explorer
a favorite book: Put Me in the Zoo
hobbies besides reading: being outside, playing with water
an educational goal for 2014: learn to read by herself

Hooray hooray! We have another independent reader! It's just been in the last couple of months, but she's taking off rather well. Her favorite books right now are the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. She does a great job of reading with vocal expression. She loved co-op and meeting her new friends, and thought it was the greatest thing that we had a preschool group Christmas party here at our house last week. And she started taking ballet. She loves to dance!

Birdie modeling her new dance class tote bag I made for her. She's also trying to learn how to wink. (An important skill, for sure.)

MAGNOLIA - preschool
favorite type of books: alphabet books
a favorite book: Old MacDonald had a Farm
hobbies besides reading: going outside, drawing, the Sketchpad app on our tablet
an educational goal for 2014: do "Mitty Mouse tomputer dames"

Not only did she get to play lots of "Mitty Mouse tomputer dames," she (sadly) learned to say it properly. Her little baby voice was so cute - I miss it. She also started learning to write the letters, She can spell her name verbally, she likes to draw, and she loves our homeschool co-op. Her most recent favorite thing to do is put puzzles together. We have a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom alphabet puzzle that she does over and over and over, and sings the Alphabet Song every time.

Give Magnolia some crayons and paper (like at our church Christmas dinner), and she's set.

AZALEA - pre-pre-K
favorite type of books: ones that she can tear the pages
a favorite book: one that isn't taken away from her
hobbies besides reading: eating, sleeping in Mom and Dad's bed, being with people
an educational goal for 2014: walking and talking

Boy howdy, did she ever learn to walk and talk! She has grown so fast this year - she isn't a baby anymore. She's an opinionated and independent little girl, just like her sisters.

Azalea is learning to put together puzzles.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you in 2015!
