change of plans

Almost exactly two weeks after I posted about finishing our second 1000 Book Challenge, for a lengthy list of reasons, AC and I decided to stop homeschooling and enroll our children in the local public schools the following fall.

We spent the spring filling out paperwork for Sunny and Posy to be evaluated for IEPs for various special needs issues. Birdie was given the choice to stay home or go to school, and she thought hanging out with a larger group of kids than she's ever been in sounded awesome.

Off they went for the 2017-18 school year.

Magnolia and Azalea were still home - Magnolia would have been in kindergarten, but wasn't ready to be away from Mom yet. Azalea was still four. I know it's more and more common to put kids in preschool starting at age three, but that was one line too many to cross.

The three big girls thrived - they did amazingly well in public schools. On one hand, I was happy to not be homeschooling anymore. I had hit some major burnout personally. On the other, I had failed. I was not able to educate my children myself. Toward the end of the school year, I was featured as a guest writer on The Art of Simple elaborating on our decision and my feelings about it.

Today, all five started school.

I've not eliminated homeschooling as an option for the future. I doubt Sunny and Posy will ever be pulled back out of public schools, but the three younger girls might do well with the apprenticeship/intern idea for their teen years rather than a strictly academic format. We don't know. They're only 8, 6 and 5. For now, we've hit the jackpot of elementary schools so we'll run with it.

And I am home ... alone ... weird ... Even more differently, I'm now doing major developmental edits on a memoir for a friend who has a very interesting story to tell about his life. I'd been planning to homeschool for another 13 years, until Azalea graduated from high school. Restarting my career was not anywhere on my radar until a month ago. I was a writer and editor for years in my pre-mom life in the journalism and government arenas. This is a completely different direction - memoirs. But here I go!
