first major science project

We have a container garden on our patio that we started in March from seeds.

crumbling up the compost (gin trash from Louisiana cotton fields - this stuff is MAGIC!) to prep it for planting the seeds

planting the seeds

one month of growth at the end of April

two months of growth at the end of May - cucumbers on the left, then tomatoes, squash on the right, and garlic in the little pots in front

two months of growth - bushy carrots, and the long containers is our 2nd crop of lettuce and salad greens

our row of herbs (basil, oregano, parsley, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, and mint) at two months

And just 2-3 weeks later at the beginning of June, the basil has completely taken off!

The cucumber bush is definitely the tallest one now. We picked 4 cucumbers over the weekend, and a couple of days later, we counted 9 more growing.

The cucumber decided to climb up our wall and tie onto the porch light. We've been impressed at what a climber it is - I thought cucumber bushes were normally grown low on the ground.

Two of our four tomato bushes - between all of them, we have over 80 tomatoes on their way! Now if we can just keep the bottom-rot away due to the extreme weather.

The girls help water and check the all the plants every day. Every time we go out the back door, we look to find more teeny little tomatoes sprouting on the vines, how much bigger the cucumbers have gotten, and how much taller the basil plants are. It's been amazing to note the differences just from one day to the next. The other day I saw at noon that one pot had absolutely nothing growing in it yet (it had just been planted a few days before) but that evening - literally, about 6 hours later - there were a number of bean vines sprouting up out of the dirt.

This is the coolest science project ever!
