quote of the day

I saw this on the "about" page of Sew Liberated, a blog I read occasionally for the crafting and photography. This quote about homeschooling jumped out at me - the writer currently has her kids in a Montessori preschool and she plans to homeschool them instead of sending them to kindergarten.

We have visions of a free-flowing curriculum that consists of backpacking trips, becoming master gardeners, traveling, and becoming playwrites.

What I like about it is the goal of becoming something. In some ways, it gives you a reason to go through the really, really, really long checklist of educational things we're all "supposed" to do. Why are we memorizing addition tables? So we can handle our money wisely and someday own a used bookstore. If we choose what we want to be, that helps a lot in dictating that checklist of things we need to do and learn to get there.

I have visions of camping trips, traveling, and becoming musicians. I think it would be great fun to own a bookstore and/or a bakery. AC wants a workshop to build or restore all of our furniture. I especially like the idea of becoming master gardeners. I think we're off to a good start.
