Recently, I was talking to a couple of people about homeschooling. I don't remember how it came up but one of them said that I should consider putting my children in public school so they can "learn to stand in line and wait their turn."
Seriously.
Nothing about academics. Not peer grouping. Not group socialization.
Standing in line.
I didn't know what to say. I think I had a totally blank look for a few seconds and then said, "That's not important to me" and moved on with the conversation. Do they really think that in a family of 4 kids, my children will not learn to wait their turn?
But, well, if standing in line is so crucial to a child's development, here's my homeschool version of teaching it:
... waiting for the Dumbo ride at Disney World last week. HA!

Brilliant. Honestly, those people are ridiculous. Come on, give me a break. You have 4 kids (all very young). One of them is bound to poke someone else who elbows someone else who then notices the candy they are not supposed to have ... that is human nature (watch any teenager in a line).
You are just fine. I suppose my kids are screwed because in their Montessori class everything is about circles and come join us overhere and see what so and so is working on!
Some people ...
well, yes, standing in line is perhaps the single most important point of education. duh...... and learning by things that interest them.... pshaw!!! how riducuous! conforming is the best way to squish brain cells, oops, I mean learn. :D
