the Strawberry Festival and other local things

We're spending a good bit of the summer swimming at our local pool and going to the library. I don't know that these things count as field trips or what, but they certainly enhance our over-all pursuit of education.

At the pool, we often run into another family who attends our church and one of their daughters is just older than Sunny. They've started to get to know each other and have become friends. None of our kids can swim yet (we had them in lessons last summer, which bombed) but they're getting better and braver about how they handle themselves in the water.

We also go to the library quite a bit. We used their computers until we moved into our house and got our own computer back. Now we've gone back to using it for free reading time. Last time we went, we came home with over 30 books, and that was in addition to the 20-something we'd gotten the week before.

And about a month ago, South Windsor had a Strawberry Festival. It was mostly vendor tents and we didn't want to spend any money, so we walked through that area rather quickly. We did spend some time checking out the 4-H animals, which the girls enjoyed. And the train! They got to ride in a little train! It's amusing to see what things are totally thrilling when you're small, even when Mom thinks you might be "outgrowing" stuff just because you've turned 7.

Magnolia wouldn't get in the train car - at a year and a half, she's really skittish around loud machinery noises and the train "engine" was a tractor. The other girls thought it was great.

Birdie and Sunny liked the rabbits.

Posy normally won't go near animals at all, so I was happy that she pet the goat on her own without prompting or persuading.
