a new friend

When Sunny first started reading chapter books, it was suggested to me that I introduce her to Beverly Cleary books - Beezus and Ramona and Henry Huggins ... I thought about it but opted to wait. Sunny was four, like Ramona in the first books, and got into things enough as it was. I didn't want Ramona giving her any ideas.

Beverly Cleary's birthday is this month (I forget the exact date - the 20-something?) so she is our current author study for literature. A couple of weeks ago at the library, I got Beezus and Ramona for Sunny and showed it to her when we got home. On our next trip to the library, I showed Sunny the shelf with all the Cleary books in the "big kid" section and she came out of the stacks with a stack. I think we have 7 Cleary books kicking around here now, and she's read nothing but them for the past week. The Ingalls family has, at least temporarily, been replaced by the Quimbys as Sunny's top reading choice.

And ideas from Ramona? In one of the books, Ramona powders her nose and forehead with marshmallows. Sunny discovered that we had some marshmallows left over from AC making smores with the Scouts the other night and got into them to eat. But first - oh yes - she powdered her nose with it.

P.S. About an hour after posting this, I got an email from a writer's group friend with info about Beverly Cleary - her birthday is tomorrow (April 12) and it's Drop Everything and Read Day in honor of her books. Done and done!
