the beeeeach! and Mystic Aquarium

After 2 years, we finally made it back to the beach! Hallelujah - we love the ocean!

We went to Hammonasset on the Connecticut shore, which is a beach on Long Island Sound. So the waves were barely there and it was a great spot for babies and small kids. The tide was out when we got there, so the girls were able to go pretty far out in the water and it wasn't over their heads. They LOVED it. We built a sandcastle, looked at the billions of shells, rolled in the sand and made "sand angels" which meant they had to keep getting back in the water to rinse off ... The only reason we left was because we'd left all the food back at our campsite and the girls were getting hungry.

We camped overnight there - definitely more fun for the kids than for the parents, but I'm glad that AC humored me/us and we did it. We roasted marshmallows on our little fire. We looked at the stars with the Skymap app on the phone - we had a good view of Mars and Saturn. We did shadow puppets on the side of the tent with the flashlight.

Saturday morning, we were up, done with breakfast, and on the beach before 8 am. High tide! So we talked about the water level a little bit (fairy science - water!) - we need to pursue that a little more in books or something now that we've seen it, to make sure the girls understand it. We stayed there for only about an hour because a rainstorm was rolling in. The girls weren't paying any attention but AC and I were watching the sky. We cut our beach time short that time.

Once we broke camp, we headed to the Mystic Aquarium - I've heard a lot about it since we moved here. The aquarium has a lot to do - we really liked it. It's expensive - no question about that! A 2nd trip will more than pay for the membership, so we went with that. The girls liked the sea lions and penguins. We touched stingrays and crabs in various touch pools. The beluga whales didn't hold their attention at all, but I could have sat there for a long time watching them. They're gorgeous! I love how white they are in the deep blue water. There's a webcam on a separate website here to watch the beluga whales during the day. There are also a lot of animal videos on the aquarium's website that I'd like to watch with the girls to solidify in their minds what we saw during our visit.

We are here! We are here! Birdie checked out the "sand castle."

Baby Azalea (who is not such a baby anymore even though she turned 18 months the day before this trip) at the sting ray touch tank.

Posy and Dad chatting with the beluga whales - so. cool.

Magnolia loved the penguins.
