Field trip 3 was on Saturday - the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst MA had a free book event with the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. We LOVE LOVE LOVE Elephant and Piggie, so it was a no brainer to go.
Birdie has literally learned to read with these books. She and Posy have this routine down of going back and forth with the dialogue. They've even started acting them out, especially Let's go for a drive! All the girls love the books. AC and I even love them - they're extremely expressive (especially considering how simple and minimal the illustrations are), hilarious, and very clever. My personal favorite is I am a frog! They're the only children's books I've ever actually called my siblings and told them that they need to get these books for their own kids.
We started with getting the books at the library. Then I got a few for the girls for Christmas, and at this event, we were given more books. If you live in New England, you seriously need to keep an eye on the Eric Carle museum's schedule. We've been given free books 2 of the 3 times we've gone there. I went through the stacks available to make sure we got books we didn't already have.
We had a fun time in the art studio making our own books. The girls hung out in the library with Dad while I stood in line for over half an hour to meet Gerald and Piggie. And we went into the actual for-real galleries for the first time. I really appreciate this one because while it is original art, most of it is behind glass so I'm not having a heart attack just walking in for fear of my kids putting a handprint on it. They also have scavenger hunts in both the Carle gallery and guest gallery. The guest gallery this time was original art from the Madeline series by Ludwig Bemelmans, another favorite of our girls.
Good, good times. We love the Eric Carle Museum.
