winter term wrap-up

Aaaand I'm calling it a wrap on term 1! I had told the kids that we'd work next week if they didn't have all their assignments done ... but the week off is for me, not them. I have co-op classes to finish prepping, mainly.

I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish these 8 weeks:

1. Get through Chapter 34 in Story of the World 1 (Ancient History).
We got to chapter 32.

2. Sunny and Posy: all the lower case letters in cursive. This was the language arts focus this term.
Done.

3. Birdie, Magnolia, Azalea: get to #550 in the 1000 Book Challenge.
We got to 536.

4. Complete Life of Fred - A.
Done.

5. Read Whole Body Listening, discuss, and practice.
We did, but it needs even more reinforcement.

6. Four field trips.
We did three - the Peabody, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, and the Springfield Museums. Our fourth is on Monday to the fire department.

We checked out 236 library books in January - a new record for a month, and 136 in February. We also started listening to audio books in the van while driving around the area. We've listened to Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne and 26 Fairmount Ave. by Tomie dePaola so far, and this is definitely a trend to continue.

All the girls (except Azalea because she's too young) are in dance classes at a little studio about a mile from our house - Sunny and Posy are both taking jazz, and Birdie and Magnolia are in a ballet/tap combination.

Sunny and Posy are doing a 90-minute STEM group on Monday evenings with AC as one of the three parent leaders. It's done by the Boy Scouts ... but it's not traditional youth-leadership Scouting, which is completely aggravating to AC. This is a pilot program so we're not expecting perfection, but even as a test, it's very poorly organized and even more poorly managed by the local BSA administrators. We're only seeing it through the school year because we dumped $600 into it. Then we're out.

It's a good start to the year.
