FT 4: the fire department

My kids asked to tour a fire department. So I made a few phone calls, posted an invitation on Facebook for friends to join us, and we did.

We first listened to a volunteer talk about what to do at home if there's a fire - get out of the house and go to a designated spot in the yard, call 911, etc. We watched a firefighter put on all of his gear, including the facemask (and learned that since this particular firefighter wears glasses, he has to remove them to put the facemask on, but it has his prescription in the lenses in the mask. Cool!) If the kids are in a housefire and they see the big yellow suit, they were told to go give the firefighters a high-five.

Birdie wasn't impressed that the firefighter's protective gear stunk.

Then we checked out the truck - where all the hoses are kept on the side and the back, and learned about a variety of other gear such as the tools to pry open doors. They also saw the Jaws of Life for car accidents. I didn't request this ahead of time, but I was so pleased that one of the firefighters talking to the kids was a woman. Our group (by luck of the draw, totally unintentionally) is mostly girls so it was so nice for them to see that being a firefighter isn't just a boy thing - they can do it too.

The kids were allowed to get into the seating area of the cab, and they all had to take a turn buckling the seatbelt.

Then we went outside to check out the hook-and-ladder truck! This extension goes 105 feet. It was fully extended, and then lowered so we could get a picture with the kids next to the bucket.

As we were leaving, Posy was hopping around excitedly: "I want to be a firefighter when I grow up! It will be awesome, like crossing swords with Captain Hook!!"

A huge thank you to Greg, Shawn and Debbie at the South Windsor Fire Department!
