term 2 week 5

September 5-9, 2011

In addition to ballet and tap class, this week the girls started a beginning music class put on by one of the ladies from our church. It's prep for learning to play any musical instruments. Their first class covered rhythm and different sounds, and they learned what a quarter note is on the music staff. They loved it. So glad our friend is doing this for the kids!

Monday was Labor Day so we didn't have any official school time. We did our usual amount of tons of reading, including going through a dinosaur book for over half an hour with Dad. We had been planning on an outing that day, but Tropical Storm Lee was on its way over our area with a good amount of rain so we stayed home.

Tuesday was one thing after another. We started with the music class first thing in the morning, and then went straight to the library. We've been going to the Wednesday story time for awhile, but decided this week to add Tuesday as well. We had the 30-minute story time, and spent another 30 minutes for free reading. We spent an hour at home with handwriting practice, math (shapes/geometry), and the poet-tree, this time adding a few of our favorite silly poems by Shel Silverstein. Both girls went to dance in the afternoon, since Sunny's Monday class was canceled due to Labor Day. Whew! Full day! And since the weather was so nice, after dinner, AC took the girls to the park to play for almost 2 hours.

Wednesday, we slowed it waaaaay down and spent another hour at the library. That was it. I think I was more tired from Tuesday than the girls were.

Thursday, we started on a list for a full day of subjects. We read poetry, practiced handwriting, and reviewed some pre-reading things with Posy to make sure she's fully on board and we can move on to the next step in her learning to read. She's good to go. Sunny said she wanted to do the rest of school (I had more plans for math, history, and science) "in the evening" and then we never got to it. Hmm. Next time, we'll just push through.

Friday, we did our science and history plans from the day before. We never did get to math. Oops. Science - we finished reading a library book about the body systems and the last section of the book talked about how to take care of our bodies - 1. exercise, 2. keep your body clean, 3. eat healthy. We made a chart of "eating our colors," categorizing fruits and vegetables by color, and read a couple of books about the fruit and vegetable groups. I was watching the clock out of the corner of my eye, and I was surprised that the girls stayed with it for an entire hour before they were ready to move on to something else.

We did 30-45 minutes of history, reading the introduction section of our new history book with the writing pages of a family history booklet. I got out the binder that we started last spring for collecting our papers in and Sunny read through the section of our "book report" pages. She noticed that a couple were missing because we never did them, so we had to end history and do book reports on the old books too. Sure. Whatever makes her happy.

Aaaand I'm totally counting our Saturday field trip for a school day - we went to a Celtic festival in Jackson. It was okay. It appeared that the experience for most people was to sit around listening to music and drinking beer. Not our thing - the drinking or the sitting. The girls did participate in a large group dance, and we checked things out at an area for midieval re-enactors.

Sunny couldn't lift the helmet off the table but wanted to see how her head fit into it anyway.
