new (to us) authors

I've recently been reading a lot of children's and Young Adult novels to get ahead of Sunny and see what's out there for older elementary kids now. She's reading classics like Pippi Longstocking and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle right now, and loving them. Awesome. But sooner or later, she's going to want to read books that weren't around when I was a kid.

I was referred to two authors - Shannon Hale and Jessica Day George. Hale wrote Princess Academy, which was a selection for my bookgroup this year. I got it right away from the library (even though it's not on the calendar until this fall) and loved it. I am just fine with my daughters reading about how to be a princess in that context.

Jessica Day George wrote a dragon trilogy, starting with Dragon Slippers. That's the only one I've read so far - I enjoyed it and wouldn't mind having the whole set around. I'm reading Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow right now and I absolutely love it. It's supposed to be based on the Norwegian fairy tale, East of the Sun and West of the Moon. I think I have a literature project for myself - to compare the novel to the original fairy tale.

I haven't read any of their other books ... yet. Definitely on my reading list!

I would recommend Sharon Creech. You would likely really enjoy some of her lit. I especially like The Wanderer and Walk Two Moons. The Castle Corona is a fun little romp too.
