FT 7: the Trash Museum

Yes, there really is a place in Hartford called the Trash Museum! But we heard it's closing this summer, so we thought we'd better hurry up and go visit it. So we did yesterday.

We learned all kinds of stuff about recycling, including observing the drop-off location for close to half of Connecticut's recycling pickup and watching the live camera feed of what was going down the sorting belts. We learned the history of trash dumping and municipal sanitation in general, and specifically Connecticut's recycling management. Connecticut built facilities in the 1980s to burn trash to turn it into energy - now, 75% of Connecticut's trash is burned for energy creation. That is so cool! Of course we're going to continue to recycle everything possible at our home, but I feel a lot better when there's no recycle option and I have to use the trash for disposal. It's not going to a landfill - it's being turned into electricity!

It's a very small museum/activity center, and I'm sad that it's closing because that was really informative!! And my kids thought it was fun! Who knew that a trash museum would be all that!

on a scale to weigh our entire family, similar to the scale that weighs the trucks coming in to dump trash or recycling

making crafts out of recycled materials - lots of cardboard, with added sequins and googly eyes

"sorting" recycling on a conveyor belt - they thought the mini hard hats were the coolest

watching the real recycling through the observation windows
