My first "textbook" has arrived! I ordered Five in a Row Volume 1 for a unit-study based reading time for the summer, and picked it up at the post office this afternoon. We're ready to go for Monday.
The general idea with Five in a Row is that each volume (there are 4 for ages 4-8) lists about 20 books that you get at the library or buy - classic children's literature, Caldecott winners, etc. The pattern is that you read the children's book every day for a week - hence the "five in a row." On each of those 5 days, you have a different subject activity with the same book - language development, social studies, math, science, and art. The Five in a Row book outlines activity suggestions for each of the academic subjects, and you choose which ones you want to do.
We'll see how this goes.
