(week 2: May 23-27, 2011)
We had a kind-of 4-day week, but on the other hand ... I took a sick day Tuesday afternoon so we didn't do our regular school things. But we had already spent over an hour at the library reading non-stop. I literally can't tell you how many books Sunny and Posy read and looked at while Birdie and I followed each other around through the non-fiction stacks. So it wasn't a complete waste of a day. I'm counting it.
I wasn't planning to get going with math until August but Sunny has been asking all week to have a math section. I have a couple of workbooks I got awhile ago at the dollar store so I pulled out the addition one and got her going. I still need to decide on a math curriculum and order it - that's one thing I don't trust myself to wing it with, but for now, I can get her going with worksheets and other activities here and there. Looks like math will be added to our regular line-up next week because really? I tell her No when she's asking to do math because it's not on my schedule? Don't think so.
Handwriting: More pre-writing from the preschool book at the beginning of the week. Wednesday, I pulled out our chalkboard easel and asked Sunny to "draw" all the numbers for me, just so I could see how she did. They definitely need practice but it was a strong first attempt. She practiced writing the numbers for the rest of the week.
Five in a Row: The book for this week was Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans.
Literature: More stories of the Greek gods and goddesses. Holy cow, those gods were mean to each other! The stories of how the star constellations were "formed" are kind of cool but sheesh! Almost done with the book.
Science: Sunny and I discussed what order she wants to do the following topic areas - animals, plants, and the body. She said she wants to do animals first, but we're doing plants a bit at the same time because of our garden. We have a container garden on our patio that is flourishing really well (we're going to have more butternut squash than we know what to do with). Sunny goes out with AC to check the plants and water them every evening. She did a couple more experiments with her dad in the evenings - apparently this needs to be added to the regular line-up as well.
PE: It's hot enough to swim regularly now and we went out to the pool twice this week. We're going to start "official" swim lessons next week with AC, which will consist of setting a timer and they have to work on some skill for awhile before they can play.

Aaron makes an amazing curried butternut squash soup - when we make it, we always make way too much, and end up giving a lot of it away. Everyone LOVES it, and says we are more than welcome to ditch our leftovers whenever we'd like. He also talks of making butternut ravioli one of these days, but that has yet to happen.
