week 8 review

(week 8: July 4-8, 2011)

Yyyyyeah. Not. A. Good. Week.

Monday's holiday was nice! I didn't get any of those cool Independence Day crafts going - maybe next year when I'm not afflicted with pregnancy-brain-dead-ness. We had some friends over for a barbecue. AC is an excellent cook and we stuffed ourselves. We went down to the park to watch the fireworks ... which ended up being a lightning show as we booked it 4 blocks straight up a hill back to the car to beat the rain. We told Sunny - who was very mad that the fireworks were canceled - that we saw God's fireworks. She didn't buy it.

And then ... nothing. We did a semi-equivalent of one day if we combined everything school-like that we did over the course of the entire week. Maybe. So this whole week is shot on our daily count. I apparently can either 1. homeschool and do some cleaning around the house OR 2. do everything else. Not both in the same day/week. My brain capacity these days is rather limited. I used it all up this week looking for a van (our current vehicle is maxed out for passengers) and dealing with sciatica. I hate that part of pregnancy.

On another note, a few things are just not quite clicking here. I know we've only been doing this for a couple of months and I need to give it time ... but I'd rather change things up when I'm getting so much push-back from Sunny rather than keep beating our heads against the wall if there are other alternatives that will work better. Now if I could just figure out what those alternatives are. I've been reading quite a bit in the past couple of weeks and thinking a lot about various options.

And really - AC and I have reminded ourselves this week that Sunny is barely 5 and Posy is still only 3. What's the rush? Sunny already reads like a maniac. If I want to introduce any topic to her, all I have to do is have a book about it at her level in the house and she'll pick it up. Yes, she's asking to do math, but to her, "math section" is board games where you count how many spaces you're going, or Monopoly money. Not worksheets. She likes to play with science experiments and do art projects. We need to keep our school day plans consistent to get some structure established, but other than that, really, we're fine at this point.
