possible ban on the Berenstain Bears

Now that we're home from our vacation, we have indeed started our second term of this school year. But wow, am I getting an awful lot of pushback from Sunny this week.

The local public schools started this week, and she's convinced that she'd rather be there, at kindergarten in a "real" school. I asked her what she thinks happens at "real" school - they use clay and build with blocks and have recess. Right. Thank you, Berenstain Bears, for creating this impression of what school entirely consists of. Of course I realize that storybooks encouraging kids to be cooperative about going to school aren't going to talk about the drudgery of sitting at a desk for a good majority of the day. But that's quite a stretch.

No more Berenstain Bears at our house for awhile?

Oh, and while I'm at it - the Bear family has lots of stories where the kids fight and then resolve it at the end. What lines do my girls repeat from the books and the cartoons that they've chosen from the library? The insults. Particularly the insults that are shouted. It's really getting tiring.

Anyway, we've explained to her that school does have those things but there's also a lot of sitting still and no talking (which she can't do for 5 minutes, seriously), doing worksheets without arguing or complaining or coloring all over them, and no snacks or drinks any time she wants them. And then there's the fact that Heavenly Father told Mom and Dad that this is what He wants our family to do - have school at home instead of sending the girls to public schools. It doesn't matter what other reasons we have for homeschooling, even though we have a lot of good ones. God said so, and that's the end of the discussion.

But in the Berenstain Bears, the parents never talk without being condescending towards one another. The father comes off as a complete idiot (which most dads are not), and the kids don't learn the lesson at hand they just learn how to manipulate mom and dad.

I think your ban might be a decent idea.
