I was looking for a project recently just for kicks, and hit on the idea of putting together the display case for the children's section at our public library. The children's librarian has gotten to know our kids pretty well in the past year or so, especially Birdie who heads over to say hello and sit on her lap at her desk most of the time we're there.
The theme for the summer reading program is DREAM BIG. I titled the display case, DREAM BIG ... AND CHANGE THE WORLD. And we filled it with biographies. A nonfiction angle! Reading isn't just about the pretend stuff!
During the month of May, in the middle of all the recitals and our trip to Florida and everything else that was going on ... At home, we read short biographies of people who have provided our modern world with major upgrades in our standard of living. Sunny did a coloring page for each person, and we did a bullet point summary for each. These two pages were mounted on cardstock and put in the display case along with the books.
We read about Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, Jim Henson, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Susan B. Anthony. Kind of a random mix, but that was part of the point. You can make a difference doing just about anything.
