mythology kick

It was the convergence of two things - Sunny discovered the Percy Jackson series, based on Greek mythology, right around the same time we got to Ancient Greece in our history book. And since I like to combine history and literature ... here we go ...

I don't know what got her started on the actual mythology - I think I just got a couple of books from the library and she took off with it. Since December, she's read over 40 different books about mythology, starting with Greek but also branching out to Roman, Egyptian, and Norse. Posy and Birdie have also started reading the mythology books that come in and out of the house.

A favorite for our girls is the Rick Riordan book, Percy Jackson's Greek Gods - it's a funny retelling of the original myths, as a narrative from Percy Jackson. I had no idea about Kronos and Rhea being the parents of Zeus and some of the other Olympian gods until Percy filled me in! I need to just buy this book because we keep checking it out from the library.

There's a new set of graphic novels for a number of the Greek gods by George O'Connor. There are seven and the most recent one was just released last year (2015), so there may be more on the way. He has a great website, olympiansrule.com that includes questions for readers about the stories, and even some readers theater scripts and paper face masks.

Has Sunny also read "Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes"? Hilarious retelling of the tales of Perseus, Hercules, Psyche, Jason, and others.
